carbon dioxide by car

The dominant greenhouse gas in a car's exhaust is carbon dioxide/CO2' but other gases are also important with respect to global warming. For example, nitrous oxide/N20 though emitted in smaller quantities, is about 300 times more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Hence, the convention is to express a carbon footprint in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Measured in this unit, com-bustion of a litre of petrol emits greenhouse gas equivalent to 3.15 kilogram of carbon dioxide. One can say this is the footprint of the car that burns a litre of petrol to travel 15 kilometres. However, the petrol's combustion accounts for only about three-quarters of the carbon story. The other quarter is caused by supply chain of the fuel: Getting it out of the ground, shipping it, refining it and getting it to the pump. Based on these calculations, your travel by car from Ahmedabad to Mumbai will have a 'footprint' of about 1'15 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent.
